Hungry Hustlers had their cake and ate it at Newlands as they gobbled the Cream on a long but surprisingly docile alley.
The only leg to fail (slightly) was first. Whereas Marty, making a welcome once-only return to the club, and John made considerable gains on their opponents, Lewis unusually struggled going on first and Hustlers ended the leg a couple down on Cream.
Second leg, bolstered by a 14 spare from Lloyd and a 9 spare from Malc, redressed the balance with the highest leg of the night. Lloyd finished with 40 and Malc managed a morale-boosting 41 to put the Hustlers 2 ahead at the close of the leg.
Third leg started to do the damage. Led by Ant, who finished with 42, the leg managed to pull a further 8 pins ahead, leaving last leg with a small but welcome cushion of 10 pins.
Last leg failed to live up to expectations but were under very little pressure against what turned out to be Cream’s lowest leg. They gradually pulled away and, with the asking rate disappearing out of Cream’s reach, a victory of 11 by last leg brought Hustlers’ winning margin up to 21 pins.
